Register A Nickname

Registering your nickname is quick and easy.  You should register your nickname so that it is yours and nobody else can use it, just like you registered your FallenSword character.  Once you are registered, NickServ will protect you and your nickname from anyone else wanting to use it or claim it as their own.

Step 1: Make sure your name is right.

You need to be using the nickname that you want to register, so if you would like to register “fred”, then your current nickname should be “fred”.  If you need to change your nickname, you can do so with the /nick command.

Example:
If you wanted to use the nickname “fred”, you would use this command: /nick fred
If you wanted to use the nickname “bluebell”, you would use this command: /nick bluebell

Step 2: Register with NickServ

Once you are using the right nickname, you can ask NickServ to register it for you, so that it belongs to you.  You will need to provide a valid email for the registration, since nickserv will email a special code to you, and if you every forget your password then you can have it sent to this email address.  The registration commands should be typed in the server status window, that’s the window called “status” or “fallenswordirc.com”.

Example:
If you wanted to register using the password “fredalicious” and the email “fred2009@hotmail.com”, you would use this command: /ns register fredalicious fred2009@hotmail.com
If you wanted to register using the password “bluebell74″ and the email “prettyflower@yahoo.com”, you would use this command: /ns register bluebell74 prettyflower@hotmail.com

Step 3:  Check your email!

When you use the register command, NickServ reserves your nickname and sends you an email to let you know it is about to register your nickname.  In the email that nickserv sends you is a special code, all you have to do is copy the code in your email and paste it into irc, there’s even instructions in the email too, just in case you forget.  If you don’t think you have received your email, then you should check your spam folders, it will sometimes get tagged as spam when using hotmail or yahoo.

Step 4: All done.

That’s it, once you use the magic code sent in your email, you’re registered!  From now on, nobody else will be able to use your nickname but you and you’ll be able to use the more advanced services like linked nicknames and channel registration.

Now you should move on to read how to identify to NickServ
